How does it work in practice?
After an initial consultation with Jon we identified that he felt his stroke was a little in-to-out (swinging to the right) but his bad miss was left when he felt he would rotate the putter head too much. Jon uses a Scotty Cameron blade style of putter which offers a bit of weighting in the toe of the head. This would allow the head to rotate which was needed for his stroke path, but it seemed it sometimes rotated too much. Generally speaking someone with a strong ‘arc’ to their stroke would best suit a putter with some toe-weighting whereas someone who has a more ‘straight back – straight through’ putting stroke would best suit a face-balanced putter.
After some discussion about the preferred style of putter we decided to experiment and try a more face balanced putter (mallet) - not something Jon would have been drawn to. The results were surprising. The amount the swing path was traveling to the right halved, meaning the putter head no longer needed to rotate as much. This improved the starting direction the ball travelled on. As the putter had a different face insert compared to his own it also offered a more consistent speed off the face and his distance control improved. Ultimately he became more consistent with line and pace which as we all know that is putting in a nutshell. On the other side, we got Jon to try a few other styles of putter and it was amazing to see how the numbers changed from putter to putter… some better, some worse. Certainly highlighted the need to get fitted for a putter to give yourself the best chance to hole putts.
We will be looking at stocking some more putters with a view to holding putting demo days in the near future.
How can this help you?
Why wait for demo days? If you are struggling with your putting then with the use of TrackMan and some professional guidance we can determine whether it is technique that needs improving or you are simply using the wrong putter for your stroke.
